The ROK Government confirmed and announced K-UAM (Korea Urban Air Mobility) Road Map, which will allow commute by air. By following the road map, ROK Government has set ‘First Introduction of Commercialized UAM Service’ as its main objective and provided staged goals as the following: Flight Demonstration by 2024 and Preparation for commercialization in 2030.

With continuous development of key technologies in materials, batteries, and control system (S/W), the UAM, three dimensional air transportation with eco friendly and low noise characteristics, became the realizable next generation mobility. With targeted flight distance being 30~50km at urban areas, the UAM could be capable of reaching the one-hour distance for passenger cars in just 20 minutes.

As the UAM industry is prioritizing airframe development, major airworthiness authorities, such as FAA and EASA, are either preparing safety standards or applying temporary standards on airframes. Several airframes are already under the certification phase. To increase international cooperation, ROK Government will promote expansion of the agreement·committment terms with the leading authorities in the field of global aero standards, FAA and EASA, and establish sustainable channels through which they can pursue ongoing cooperation. To ensure early realization of UAM service, government-level promotion will take place in 2020 to attract global freight forwarder and airframe manufacturers.

ROK Government will push forward in enacting safety-first UAM Special Regulation by 2023. To do so, they will accelerate the realization process of UAM service and the growth of relevant industries by setting up ‘UAM Team Korea,’ a consultative group or community in policy consolidated of industries, universities, government-funded research institutes, and government agencies, within June. UAM Team Korea will work on the way forwards, specified in the road map, discover and discuss new tasks, and guide multi-perspective coordination from the participants for each topic of interest.
